In December of 1996 a small group gathered to plan the first Wabash Valley Race for the Cure and from those first plans we have grown into the largest 5k event in the Wabash Valley. In the battle against breast cancer there are many warriors with as many reasons for joining the fight, they may be a survivor, a co-survivor, a friend, a family member, or someone just wanting to make a difference but
they all have the same goal to end breast cancer.
In the fourteen years we have grown from 600 to over 3,000 participants, granted out over one and
half million dollars locally and given close to half a million dollars to breast cancer research. We were
able to achieve this success with amazing sponsors, incredibly dedicated volunteers and supporters
who know we will win this battle.
The Wabash Valley Affiliate benefits from a variety of fundraising events. Each year these events are planned and implemented by volunteers and over the years these events have included a best dressed dog show, basketball games, parades, ice cream socials, crop for the cure, survivor celebrations and hundreds of education
events.
The eleven counties we serve in Indiana and Illinois is where our funding provides screening, treatment and
education. Each yearly grant cycle provides funding in our service area. This grant process also brings
an extreme awareness for more funds, more access to services, a greater need to educate so that
early detection will happen and the list of survivors will grow and a cure is found.
