JOIN MAYOR BURKE AND THE CITY OF TERRE HAUTE FOR "LIGHTING OUR WAY TO A CURE"
Mayor Kevin Burke and the City of Terre Haute are joining the Wabash Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to bring awareness to breast health and the fight against breast cancer during the "Lighting our Way to a Cure" event at City Hall on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
During the event, which will begin at the ribbon statue on the south side of Terre Haute's City Hall, Burke will read a proclamation declaring October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Terre Haute. Participants are then invited to participate in a candle-lit walk from City Hall to the pink ribbon painted on the street at the intersection of Sixth Street and Wabash Avenue.
Burke hopes this event will bring additional awareness to the importance of breast health and some startling breast cancer statistics.
According to the American Cancer Society, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about 1 in 8. In 2007, an estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States and an estimated 40,460 women will die from the disease. In addition, it is estimated that 2,030 men will be diagnosed and 450 men will die of breast cancer during 2007.
"Having a wife, 3 daughters, and 6 granddaughters makes this cause very important to my family," Burke said. "With 10 women in my immediate family, the 1 in 8 statistic is very real to me."
Burke says staff members at City Hall have formed a team for the 11th annual Komen Wabash Valley Race for the Cure©, which will be held on Oct. 6 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. He encourages everyone to join him for this important event. To register for the Race, or to learn more about the Wabash Valley Affiliate of Susan G.
